Hippolytusbuurt
Tree-lined, gabled, mirror-still — this is the Delft of every postcard.
A narrow canal lined with 17th-century merchant houses, just behind the Markt. The classic Delft canal view.
Named after Saint Hippolytus, parish saint of the medieval Oude Kerk. The canal was Delft's main shipping artery in the Golden Age; the gabled houses on both sides housed brewers, merchants and Delftware traders. Thursdays the antique and flower market spills onto the quay. From the Boterbrug bridge you get the symmetrical reflection used in countless Delft photographs.
