Markt
Stand in the middle of one of Holland's largest squares — and look up.
The vast central square of Delft, flanked by the Nieuwe Kerk and the Stadhuis. Market day is Thursday; on other days it is one of the most photogenic spots in the Netherlands.
Delft's Markt is one of the largest market squares in the Netherlands, about 120 by 80 meters. It is flanked on the east by the Nieuwe Kerk (tomb of William the Silent and the House of Orange) and on the west by the Renaissance-era Stadhuis (1620). The square has hosted markets since the 13th century. Thursday is general market day; Saturdays host an antiques and book market in summer. Johannes Vermeer was baptised in the Nieuwe Kerk and lived just a few streets away.
