Oude Kerk
A 75-meter brick tower that leans almost 2 meters off vertical — and Vermeer sleeps beneath it.
The Old Church of Delft, with its dramatically tilting tower. Vermeer is buried here, along with the inventor of the microscope, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.
Founded around 1246, the Oude Kerk has a 75 m tower that leans 1.96 m out of vertical — locals call it Scheve Jan ("Crooked John"). The lean is due to canal-side foundations. Buried inside: Johannes Vermeer (1675), Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1723, inventor of the microscope), and Admiral Maarten Tromp. The bells from the carillon include one cast in 1570.
