Stadhuis

A 17th-century town hall wrapped around a medieval prison tower.

Delft's ornate Renaissance city hall, designed by Hendrick de Keyser after the great fire of 1618. The grey stone tower in the middle is older — the medieval Het Steen.

Rebuilt in 1620 by Hendrick de Keyser after most of the medieval city hall burned in 1618. The central tower, Het Steen, dates from around 1300 and once held the city prison — Balthasar Gérard, William of Orange's assassin, was tortured here. Still functions as Delft's registry office; couples queue up to marry beneath the gilded ceilings.
